What’s the difference between a fixie and a Single Speed?
People say this has a coast that has a free wheel. I don’t know what free wheels and coasts aree. Someone please explain to me in an easier way
Gary: It’s probably your great fortune to be young enough not to aquainted witt older genrations, terminology.
At one time, just about every bicykle and some cars had free wheeling ability.In short it meant when the energy that drove the wheel was cut of, ie. stopping pedaling on a bike or a car going downhill, the power source was completely disengaged, letting the wheel roll freely with only the brakes to slow or stop it. Many were the times, as a kid, I and some other boys would strugle to pedal up a rather tall bridge to experience the joy, and dangerof lightly backing the pedals to let the bike free wheel down the bridge. One had to be good at it, because a sudden jerk on the handlebars could send you catapulted ahead of a bike going 40 mile/hr. The force of inertia of the spinning wheel would cause the bike to keep going straight , even running over one . Cars were the same way. It was similar to driving a stick shift up a high hill and putting it in neutral to see how fast one could coast ( roll down a hill having only the force of gravity accelerating it every second). Also in the old days, big rig trucks, would have to downshift when coming down a step grade. With the wheels having to turn the motor, rather than the other way around, gave the driver extra help in braking. On a steep grade, one could burn up a set of brakes, set their wheels on fire because of the heat generated and face sudden death. A big fear then was missing a gear on the down shifting with the rapidly increasing speed making it very hard to engage the gears again.( the wheels were free wheeling at this point)Only thing left to slow the truck was the brakes and they could go quickly. Most heavily traveled routes have truck run-aways. A steep very rough up grade or piles of sand to plow into. Hell on the driver and truck, but better than crashing down the side of a hill at 80MPH.That’s a sure killer. Whan free wheeling on a bike using no pedal power , we called it coasting. In fact some bike were advertised as being free wheeling coasters. One is coasting when they are freewheeling.
